Create a Hero

Every great story starts with someone we care about. Your hero needs three things: something they want, something they're good at, and something they're afraid of.

Author secret: Heroes are more fun when they have a weakness. A superhero who is scared of the dark? Now that's interesting.

Your mission: Invent a hero. Give them a name, a power, a fear and a goal.

Build a World

Where does your story happen? A floating city, a haunted school, the bottom of the ocean? Use your senses: what does it look, sound and smell like there?

Author secret: One weird rule makes a world memorable. "In this town, it rains candy every Tuesday."

Your mission: Draw a map or picture of your world, and give it one strange rule.

Give Your Hero a Problem

No problem, no story! Something has to go wrong. A villain shows up, a friend goes missing, or a storm is coming. The bigger the problem, the more exciting the story.

Author secret: Make it worse before it gets better. Just when your hero thinks they've won, add a surprise.

Your mission: Roll the Story Dice and write what goes wrong.

Write Dialogue

Dialogue is what your characters say. Good dialogue shows how a character feels without telling us. Compare: "I'm angry." vs "Give. Me. Back. My. Sandwich."

Comic secret: Keep speech bubbles short, around 15 words or fewer. Use a jagged bubble for shouting and a cloud bubble for thinking.

Your mission: Make a 3-panel comic where two characters argue about something silly.

Draw a Comic

Comics tell a story one picture at a time. Read panels left to right, top to bottom. Change the "camera": a wide shot shows where we are, a close-up shows feelings.

Artist secret: Stick figures are totally fine! Real comic artists start with simple shapes: circles for heads, lines for arms.

Your mission: Draw a 4-panel comic: wide shot, action, close-up, big finish.

Finish Your Story

A great ending solves the problem and shows how your hero has changed. Did they get braver? Kinder? Smarter? Then give your book a title and a cover.

Author secret: Read your story out loud. If something sounds weird, fix it. That's called editing, and every author does it.

Your mission: Finish your story, add a cover and print your book!
